The Boxer from Somewhere Else is a feature documentary 15 years in the making, chronicling the life and career of Ken Buchanan. The idea originated with Edinburgh-based filmmaker Jamie Steedman, who first heard Buchanan’s name through a story his father told about a friend who once boxed him in the 1950s. Curious, Jamie read Buchanan’s autobiography and was compelled by his untold story.
After arranging a meeting through his father, Jamie interviewed Buchanan with no initial plan for a film. Inspired by Buchanan’s accounts, he developed the concept into a cinematic feature. Buchanan agreed, and filming began, capturing him in a fly-on-the-wall style as he revisited key locations from his life. A private premiere was held at the Traverse Theatre in 2012, attended by Buchanan.
The film could not secure a general release due to licensing costs for archive material, and despite extensive efforts, Jamie struggled to secure investment. Years later, after the sudden deaths of his father and brother, he was driven to complete the project independently. He replaced the archive footage with original illustrations and animation, and in 2023 AJAMAX Productions came on board as distributor. The film is now scheduled for release in Vue Cinemas in June 2025.
